Federal Report States Philadelphia Police Responsible for Shooting 400 People

According to a report released by the U.S. Department of Justice, Philadelphia police officers were responsible for shooting around 400 civilians in last seven years. The report also stated that police shot black people at twice the rate in the general population.

The study was conducted by the federal department after Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles H Ramsey asked them to. He asked the department to conduct the study, when it was revealed in 2013 that the shooting by police were on rise in spite of the fact that the crime rate was dropping in the city.

The study stated, that from 2007 to 2013 around 81 percent of police shooting victims were African American people, though their population is just about 40 percent in the city.

The study revealed that the shootings were more concentrated in two neighborhoods in North Philadelphia, which had a high crime rate.

The office of Community-Oriented Policing Services (Cops) gave a detailed report of the shooting incidents. It gives a review of use of fatal force by the police, and details of each shooting incident. The details included the number of shots fired, number of suspects and people involved, races and ages of the suspects and the police officer involved, whether the suspect was armed or not, and many other details.
